Strange Playces Gallery

What once was a form of emergent play, in-game screen captures were a way for players to assert creative power over the highly regulated digital space. Game publishers of late, however, have incorporated the capacity for in-game image capture into the gamut of anticipated behaviors. Grand Theft Auto V is among the more remarkable of these titles, more a platform in and of itself rather than a mere game or even open digital world.

The Strange Playces Gallery is a curated selection of screen captures taken while playing various computer games. Many of the images are captured using NVIDIA’s “Ansel” software, which enables ultra-high definition capture. Sometimes, these images are then opened in editing software to introduce flaws or degradation. Other times they are simply cropped for composition.

Lately, I have tried manipulating the image to produce more abstract compositions. The built-in image capture software included with Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice enables the creation of interesting works of light and darkness.

Many of these selections were featured as part of the “Our Time in Los Santos” installation which was part of the Midwest Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference 2018 Creative Showcase.
